Yes, this is definitely a powerful addition to how we normally approach taking a deep breath.

All the usual three part breath, diaphragmatic emphasis is still there! But, the drawing of the breath ALL THE WAY DOWN the back body as the initiating action is a complete game changer!!

Hi Patty, I have a question!

So based on my knowledge, physiologically on an inhale the pelvic diaphragm moves downward as the pressure builds from the thoracic diaphragm expanding, and then on the exhale it gently lifts again. But am I right in digesting what you are saying is that energetically there is a coming together of these two diaphragms on the inhale, despite their physical movement of both actually descending? Or am I just utterly confused haha? Some clarity would be so appreciated, thank you!

Great question Nicola. Thank you for asking!

Yes....It is the "common"understanding and knowledge that the pelvic diaphragm descends on inhalation due to the increased abdominal pressure from the lowering of the thoracic diaphragm. And yes, that is what actually is happening in many people's bodies.

What I'm proposing is that it doesn't need to be that way. There is a different way that is "just as natural" and provides an energetic -pranic - pumping in the region of the central torso. In terms of yogic physiology this is how we keep the prana in our bodies as we breathe. Not only within, but actually providing a soft pumping of fanning of the life force in the navel region.

It is a yogic breath for sure. That said, once embodied it does become one's default breath. It is just so nourishing and centering to our whole beings.

The reason there is no need for the pelvic diaphragm to descend on inhalation is that the movement of the thoracic diaphragm above is more broadening than simply "descending". That action widens the area of the back abdominal wall and the displacement of tissues moves backwards, not needing to press on the pelvic diaphragm at all.

So, yes, you are right I am saying that there is an energetic coming together of the two diaphragms. I vacillate between just saying that and saying what I perceive to be true in my body, which is that it is genuine physical movement.
