Hi Christa. No! It is definitely not wrong to use this practice to fall asleep. There is basically not a time that isn't appropriate for yoga nidra. When the mind is alert and the nervous system is rested, you will likely not fall asleep.
The key here being..."when the nervous system is rested". Because of our stressful lives a restfully alert nervous system is a treasured commodity that is not the usual state...
However! Regular yoga practice that includes daily yoga nidra will soon begin to actually tone and balance the nervous system.
Even if you use it to go to sleep, which is fine, you can ALSO use it for the deep rest that is available when you don't_actually_fall asleep. The deepest resting state of yoga nidra will feel a lot like sleep at first. But, with a more toned nervous system you will begin to notice that it is not actually sleep! It is what is refered to as "turya". Much more restful than ordinary sleep.
Actually I didn't read it. I spoke the practice basically from memory and definitely took some liberties with the original text I had read years earlier. The basic format is there and it is that I think is so fundamentally powerful about this version.
I do have an article about Yoga Nidra that I would be happy to share with you, if you like. It includes two other "scripts" that I think are pretty good. Also, based on the original Bihar text.

How wonderful is this! I’ve always wondered, is it wrong to use yoga nidra to fall asleep?
